Science Café Woo presents: Using Zebrafish to Study Motor Circuits

August 18, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Guest scientist: Denise Zaninno from UMASS Medical School
How researchers can pick into the brain? What can they use to understand how the brain is wired? The answer: Zebrafish! This small fish represents a powerful tool to study the brain. Although simpler, zebrafish have the same cell types and connections as all other vertebrates making them ideal for understanding basic brain circuitry. One of the greatest advantages of using zebrafish is their brain is transparent, making it easy to visualize the connections within the brain. Denise Zaninno (scientist form UMASS) will discuss how studying individual genes on the zebrafish can lead to a broader comprehension of general vertebrate locomotion circuits.
